Orchestra (9 mins)

Inspired by the compositional techniques of the Franco-Flemish school of the 15th & 16th centuries, Wēven explores the idea of approaching musical material as if it were fabric. The piece is structured around two intertwining melodies which are pulled apart to create complex and dense textures and then woven back together again, revealing the underlying material.

The piece was part of a project with students of Royal Birmingham Conservatoire which saw four composers given the rare opportunity to work with an orchestra intensively for a full week before presenting the works as part of a showcase event.
