Lamentations was one of the first pieces I wrote before I started studying composition formally, and is a setting of the Lamentations of Jeremiah. I was an aspiring church musician for many years, having been a part of the Anglican choral tradition from an early age, and I wrote several liturgical works before I started studying composition and I consider this the most successful.

The piece was awarded joint-first prize in the NCEM’s Young Composer Award in 2014 and was broadcast on BBC Radio 3’s Early Music Show as part of a concert given by the Tallis Scholars in Oxford. As a recent graduate with little knowledge of contemporary composition, this award gave me the confidence to fully commit myself to the daunting pursuit of composition.
