Cello and Live Electronics (12 mins)

Kinetics, for solo cello and manually controlled two-channel live electronics, was written in collaboration with cellist Tom Pickles. The idea was to create a piece which was essentially an extended cello cadenza with subtle real-time processing which would enhance the musical material and create a surreal acoustic architecture which gradually morphed throughout the piece.

Kinetics is structured on a composite of major thirds which are interwoven with one another and shift throughout the course of the piece. The piece is senza misura, affording the cellist full interpretative licence meaning the electronics play a supporting role throughout. The electronics were performed using AudioMulch and a simple MIDI controller, but the part has been created in such a way that the electronics could easily be reproduced on a variety of different software.
